artists thrive| Kentucky Summit

This past July I joined other artist activators to participate in the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation’s Artists Thrive, platform.

This was timely, given the shuttering of the Alaska State Council on the Arts, and I felt fortified being part of a creative group dedicated to raising artists up, along with the communities they serve. Many thanks to the Tremaine Foundation and staff for serving and supporting artists by hosting the Summit.

Funding has since been restored to ASCA but not without damage. Staff suffered real personal losses. Those who were outspoken lost their jobs and can never be replaced. It will be at least a year before the agency is fully functional again.

As a human and environmental advocate I have a responsibility to speak with accuracy.

as an artist I need to be comfortable taking risks and making mistakes.

At times these forces are at odds.

The purpose of this blog is to supplement the images in the gallery without speaking for the work, to share a little of the back story, and provide insight into my artistic motivations.
